Intro

Silvercup Studios is the headquarters of one of New York City’s largest film and television production facilities. Productions such as 30 Rock, Gossip Girls, The Sopranos, When Harry Met Sally, The Godfather III and Do the Right Thing have been created in this facility.  The owners of the building, Stuart & Alan Suna, wanted to ensure that the building remained healthy and watertight.

This four story pre-war building, originally constructed in 1931 for Silvercup Bread, was in need for a full restoration of its exterior façade and bulkhead walls.  During our visual, physical and evasive inspections it was found that years of water infiltration had caused damage to the façade as well as damage to the underlying structure behind.  Modern techniques of waterproofing were implemented behind the facade which was restored to maintain its original aesthetic.

Hilights:

  • A normal construction period for the scope of work required would be approximately 8 months. Due to the tight production schedules of Silvercup’s clients the work schedule needed to be structured so that is could be carried out during the short 3 month summer tv & movie production hiatus. 
  • Magnum Opus Architecture structured the bid, working hours, after-hours permits and means by which the work would be carried out so that the work would conform to this very condensed schedule.
  • Pipe scaffold was erected around the entire building so that multiple crews could work on several areas simultaneously.
  • Even with accommodating several additional projects requested by the client such as window replacements, during the condensed construction schedule, the project was successfully completed on schedule.
